Sorry, I meant to post this message here, not behavior.
Oh why oh why do I watch Animal Cops????? I think it was the Houston version, though it might have been Miami.. Actually, probably was Miami. Anyway, the AC officer was called about a dog that had been hit by a car. Since it wasnt wearing tags, she pulled out her needle and euthanized it right there in the street! (well, in the truck, but you get the idea). According to her, this is standard policy if the dog isnt wearing ID tags. Of course, it wasnt because the dog was horribly suffering because she took time to write a ticket for someone else whose dog got out and was offleash. What if the dog had a microchip? Isnt that supposed to be the reason that we put them in our dogs? I cant believe that absolutey no effort was made to see if the dog had a chip. My chip has my vet's contact # and there is written authorization for any treatment necessary if I am unable to be reached. This has been bothering me all week. My local pound doesnt even HAVE a scanner, at least that was made in the last 5 years. So Im not sure if it would pick up Rayden's chip anyway. dainerra |

"diddy" wrote in message ... I think the area in which this was posted should be alerted to the fact that there ARE microchips for this purpose. I go to the pound every three days and scan their dogs, because they won't. This catches the incoming and outgoing within a reasonable period. But, if this had happened in your area, this dog would have already been dead. Im sure that the Miami Dade animal control would know that microchips exist. Mostly just wondering if this is a wide-spread practice, to instantly euthanize injured dogs that arent wearing a tag? I can even understand euthanizing the dog if it was horribly injured or something. I know that here, deer are sometimes shot by the cop who responds to the scene. (If the person wants a report written for insurance) If the deer is still there and suffering the officer will sometimes shoot it. Often, of course, the deer has already ran away. But this dog was wagging its tail and trying to lick the woman's face. Plus, she took time to write someone else a ticket. She kept saying "Dont kiss me, youre going to make me cry" kind of things. dainerra |

I can even understand Especially, when you wonder if the reason the dog is out on the street is because it somehow got its collar *off*, and that is how it escaped (maybe it was on a lead, or hell, if the collar was too loose and the dog backed out of it while the owner was walking it and it ran off). I don't keep a collar on my dog when he's home, because he's already gotten it caught on stuff and I have no desire to have him catch it on something when I'm not home to free him. When he's outside, the flat collar is always on, with all 4 tags on it (rabies, reward/contact tag, city tag, microchip tag) and his control collar is on when we take him for a walk, so it's unlikely he'd get away that way (or run away, for that matter) But geeze, what if someone breaks in, the dog runs out? He'd be automatically considered a stray, instead of very obviously being a pet, and killed, I'd assume. blech. natalie -- The turtle lives twixt plated decks Which practically conceal its sex. I was told on another group that the dog was scanned for a chip. I missed it both times I have seen the show. I just think it's so sad that they are so overcrowded that injured dogs are euthanized on the spot if they appear to be strays. Maybe that is the part they should emphasize to the public, not the fines. dainerra |
