Default playing with toys

My dogs like chew toys and cow hoofs, but not any other toys.
How can I teach them to play with toys?
Does it matter to their happiness if they don't play with toys?

Out of my last 5 dogs here, I only have one that likes squeeky toys.
They either like them or they don't.

Work with the dog, find out what they like, then go from there.

Kongs are a good bet for many dogs. Stuffed with p-nut butter, cheese,
or cat food.

The squeeky toy lover is a border collie BTW. ;-)

What sort of toys have you tried? Khan came to us not knowing what to
do with toys, but by appealing to his 'chase-kill' instinct, we've
managed to get him to play. But, he won't stay interested in the toy
for more than a few minutes unless there's competition.

Does it matter to their happiness if they don't play with toys?

I don't think so.

We have tried squeeky toys, stuffies, Booda rope bones, balls of assorted types
and rawhide toys.

They like the edible rawhides. Our Beagle (6 or 7 y/o) will chase a ball
occassionally but looses interest quickly.

Our Pom (3 y/o) will carry anything around in her mouth the 1st 5 minutes she
has it, and then looses interest.

My only concern is that they both pretty much just lay around unless someone is
petting them or walking them or they are chewing rawhide sticks or cow hoofs.
I don't mind, but I just want to be sure they are content and happy and not
just bored.
