Default Dog biting

My dog was previously abused. I brought him home when he was 1. He is now 6. He is very overprotective of me and doesn't like to share my affection. My mother lives with me and although my mother takes very good care of him, he sometimes bites her and growls at her. Today, however, he crossed the line and bit her severely. I am not sure as to what I can do. I feel as if I need to give him away if he jeopardizes my mother's well-being. Does anyone have suggestions?
