After waking me up every 2 hrs. last night to go potty, I took my dog to
the vet this morning. They checked her temp (normal) and noticed mucus in her stool. Luckily no impaction of chicken bone. They gave her a shot of something (a prednisone-type med) to calm her lower GI tract. They also gave me pills to give her twice a day (Metronazole). On the way home in the car she threw up ALL OVER the place. My car is a mess. I had given her about 1/2 the amount of her breakfast 2 hrs. before. That was her first episode of vomiting. I sure hope it's also the last. The vet said to feed her normal meals, but I'm gonna take it easy on her anyway. Just lean chicken broth tonight and some little meals of white rice and chicken tomorrow and Sat. thanks for the replies! This group is great! You may have to leap out of bed and take your dog out for a special walk! Just make sure she gets plenty to drink. Chicken broth is fine, as long as it is defatted. buglady take out the dog before replying |

Subject: Help! Golden ate chicken bone. Has diarrhea
From: N Date: 8/7/03 9:36 AM Pacific They gave her a shot of something (a prednisone-type med) to calm her lower GI tract. Was it sucralfate? This is an excellent med for relieving the GI tract. Sounds as though your vet decided this was a giardia-type infection. Poor gal. Normal meals is not a good idea, IMHO, until she settles down. And don;t forget plenty of fluids. Hope she feels better soon. Deb Shi the Slimmer Georgie the Scurry-Stalker |

her two meals a day is an understatement!! Maybe some plain white rice for a day or two to calm her intestines? That's what I would suggest, if you don't want to fast her (the vet gave us a sheet for vomiting and/or diarrhoea and it's basically a glucose mix (can't remember the proportions) for 24 hours or until the vomiting/diarrhoea stops, then plain boiled rice and baby food (vegies) for another couple of days, then if all is well gradually reintroduce her normal food). Also plain cottage cheese, egg yolk, etc. A little unsweetened acidophilus yoghurt added to food can sometimes help restore the balance in the gut too. The only way we can get Murphy to drink the glucose mix voluntarily is if we mix vegemite or marmite into it - if you can't get that there maybe some mild chicken stock or similar, to give it flavour (it's glucose, water and salt so it probably tastes disgusting!) We're well used to this routine with Murphy having inflammatory bowel disease, sometimes it flares up for no apparent reason. If it's really bad it's a trip to the vet and some gunk to squirt down her throat for a couple of days to settle the inflammation again. You need to make sure your dog isn't getting dehydrated or depleted in minerals. As it's been 2-3 days now, if it goes on more than a day or two longer I'd recommend a vet visit even if there's isn't blood in it. Hope your dog recovers quickly. Rachel (New Zealand) |

Thanks Rachel. I did take my golden to the vet this morning and she got a shot
and some pills to take. She's feeling better already tonight. Luckily she's been good about drinking water and showed no signs of dehydration. Her temperature is normal too.
