Especially you, Buglady.
I did as you suggested; I sat down with him and talked to him about the move, (I don't mind telling you I felt more than just a bit silly.) I made sure the two of us were alone. ![]() I took him in the bedroom and shut the door with just the two of us and talked to him about the whole move and whatever else was going to happen. Since then, he's eaten 3 more meals unassisted and I also put his food in a plastic bowl instead of the metal one. I felt the metal one would be a bit harder on his teeth than a plastic one. ( Of couse, it's my best platic tupperware bowl with the burping lid,so now I need to get another one.) BG! Thanks for the canned food suggestions, you too Sharon, Matt, Sally, Deb and everyone else who participated in this thread. I'm going to get some canned to take with us in case it happens again as well as get some for him now. I'll be trying to stay as close to his normal food as possible. Sure is grand to see him eating again! Whew! Thanks all! Terri and Luke, happy camper-dog again! |

Cripes, you're a true dog person, a good chunk of the human population already thinks you've lost the handle on your suitcase! And didn't you really think that he understands what you say anyway? I took him in the bedroom and shut the door with just the two of us and talked to him about the whole move and whatever else was going to happen. .......And I'll bet he paid attention to every word! Since then, he's eaten 3 more meals unassisted .......Good for him! Now that he's not worried any more, he probably doesn't hurt so much. And now that you know he is someone you can actually have a conversation with, you'll have to count him in on the discussions bg buglady take out the dog before replying |

We all talk to the dogs as if they understand everything we are saying, they really do give the impression they know what we are saying, or perhaps they just like the 1 to 1 attention. Even when I'm out walking I talk to the dogs, maybe I look a bit mad...lol Who cares? Glad your dog is eating again. Shell |

That's great news, Terri! I've always talked to my dogs, but never had a *serious* one-on- one until just before Murphy died. Congratulations! -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

Since then, he's eaten 3 more meals unassisted
Awesome, great to hear it. Don't be self concsious about talking to him. At our practice every single person seems to have extended conversations with the medical cases and boarders. We talk very calmly with the pets that have procedures done and even tell them what we're doing. During recovery from anesthesia we give them encouraging words as well. I frequently will walk out back to the kennel rooms and find one of the staff members half inside a kennel talking away. In the exam room the vet (my husband) always greets the pet at their level, hugs them and looks them in the eye giving them some good words. Until this thread I never really realized how much we do this and how much difference it really makes. Keep it up. -Sharon |
