Default Pet Insurance?

I posted this on another NG but am seeking further info with your
experiences.

There are two major insurance plans for pets in Canada....PetCare and
Petplan. I am considering getting a plan for my 7 year old lab and
also one for my 6 year old Akita. Has anyone had positive dealings
with either of the two companies? Does anyone have some useful info
on one or the other?
Your comments will be much appreciated.

Very few of our clients have pet insurance. I would suggest asking your vet
first what insurances he/she accepts or is a participant in. It's not as
easy as handing over a card after your appointment! But maybe in your area
it's different. This is a subject I would love to hear more input in from
owners.

I am in the States, and use VPI. I pay in full, and then send off the
form
for the reimbursement. I don't think my vet's office would get into the
filing for me. But, if it was a hefty bill I am sure they would sign the
form for the reimbursement and give me a payoff plan.

Do you mind me asking - what do they cover (well visits vs emergencies) and
at what rate? And are you happy with it? Thanks

I no longer have the pamphlets for the insurance group I like,
but I know that one of the two that you mention is *way* better
than the other.

I manned a booth for my agility club at the last pet expo in
Calgary - next door was a pet insurance company and I had plenty
of time to ask questions. I really liked their plan, but it
didn't apply to pre-existing conditions (none do) so it wasn't
right for Rocky and I.

I have the "Gold Plan" and the Routine Care ($99.00) package. $220 a year
for a bullmastiff. I seem to have gotten my money back on the routine care,
as my "shot" vet is not very expensive. Could actually come out a couple of
bucks ahead if my vet charged more. Reimbursements for flea/tick control
and heartworm preventative.

Have not yet had to file for my "Emergency Vet". He has seen her once for
some sort of anaphylactic reaction, but I had already dosed her with
benedryl, and he only charged $35.00, meds (precautionary antibiotic)
included.

I think for major incidents, there is a $40.00 deductible for event, and
then anything after $180 is like 80% covered. Under this coverage, $2,500
per incident and a total of $9,000 each "term" (year).

I have heard that if you claim something one year, this company may not
cover it the next year - they consider it "preexisting". Each year is a new
policy. I think this comes from people claiming chemo, dialysis, and those
sorts of things. If something is considered "cured' for 6 months, and
relapses - can be appealed (ear infections, even demodex). $5 back on
microchipping.

Veterinary Pet Insurance. I think they have changed their web address to
www.petinsurance.com, but I am used to going through as
www.veterinarypetinsurance.com . I think you have go through the quote
section to get a listing of gold vs. platinum and routine care listings.

I am happy. Many are not. They want everything covered, no matter how
trivial or expensive. My dog is also my work companion - I wanted coverage
for things like stepping on glass, picking up something nasty from the
morgue or funeral home, or Fates forbid a dog fight or car collision.
Enough money to get stabilized and to see how she does without going through
the "it will be expensive and how are you going to pay" conversation.

Thank you so much for your feedback. It sounds good except for their
pre-existing policy and yearly renewal being like a new customer - all bets
are off. That puts total control into their hands. But I'm glad you are
happy - it's good not to have to totally worry about making those financial
choices when the pet member of your family is in crisis.
