Default Mac rakes it in

Boeing recently plowed the field where we walk the shelter dogs,
leaving people stumbling about after dark, shedding keys, eyeglasses and
any accoutrement not firmly attached. The cry goes out, "Ma-a-c!" He
scampers out, circles vigorously and comes up with the item.
The result is a desk piled with Christmas presents for him. He doesn't
do toys, so the shelter dogs will clean up.
It's really easy to teach a dog to retrieve anything with "people
scent". Pip does it, too, and it comes in very handy. (With Mac, it's
fun; with Pip, it's business. You better have a treat to trade.)

I tried this once with my friend's scary-smart dog. I had her at the marina
in Ithaca, and at the end of our walk I noticed she'd dropped her collar.
Knowing how smart she is, I told her to go back and find it. Walked around
with her for over an hour trying to find it. I'd tell her over and over to
'go find it.' She'd poke her nose into nooks and crannies, sniff around, and
look at me as if to say 'nope, nothing.'

When it got dark I decided to give up. Good thing, too. Someone had found
her collar and placed it on the sign at the front of the park.
