Default Bug Spray and Dogs....

Would a quick spray of standard mosquitoe repelent stuff be harmful at al

to her if it's only
sprayed on her back (not face). Or is there anything better to use? Or

do we really not need to
worry about it?

I have used standard (ie., containing DEET) bug spray on my dog and later
found out it's a really bad idea. (Luckily, nothing happened to my dog.)
DEET is poisonous to them. It doesn't stop my dog from occasionally licking
my legs while I myself am wearing spray containing DEET, but it's best not
to mess around in case your dog for some reason takes to madly licking his
sprayed parts.

But don't rely on herbal bug sprays made for humans, either--they don't work
very well. I suggest repellants made to keep flies off horses. It's safe to
apply to faces, and you should pay particular attention to any parts that
don't have much fur. On my dog, that's his underparts. That's where he gets
bitten the most.

You could also check camping stores to see if they sell repellants made
especially for pets.

No human bug repellent, especially not anything containing DEET. I
checked with the vet, and he said that it is a no-no since dogs tend to
groom themselves and will ingest the stuff. I like Cate's suggestion of
using something specifically made for pets. BTW, the biggest problem
we've faced when going on hikes to wooded areas have been horse flies.
They always go for the ears, that are highly vulnerable, especially in
pointy eared dogs. On a 2 mile walk, with both us and the dog doing our
bests to keep the wee beasties off, they still managed to get a few
bites in.

I've never tried this, but it's cheap and can't hurt to try:

And if you want to spend money:

or http://www.petvetsupply.com/pindfar010.html (which doesn't list the
ingredients)
or http://www.petvetsupply.com/pindwlm001.html (no ingredients either)
