I Have A nine year old Shitzu female. When she gets overly excited she starts coughing. A deep dry cough. Rubbing her neck seems to help, and I have taken her to the vet for heartworm tests. (They came back negative) Any Ideas?

I have a long haired Chihuahua that has had kennel cough symptoms for almost 4 months. He's 7 years old, the Vet has X-rayed his lungs, heart etc. but I still have to give him the cough syrup 3 times a day. They are out of pills and the syrup is messy and he hates it. Any ideas. please?
