Staph & Bath? by Channeledbymodem
Greetings, I have a cocker who is recovering from a small staph infection on his jowl. Is there any reason not to bathe him? And if so, is there any shampoo, conditioner etc. a groomer is likely to use that would be beneficial or undesirable? Thanks much, Ron

Significance of overbite? by bentcajungirl
I looked at a 6 wk old puppy last night. Boston Terrier. Female. Her head was disproportionatley large in relation to the rest of her body. The dam and sire had this trait also. Or maybe it is just a Boston trait. Her little bite was disturbing. Her lower jaw was at least 5-6mm...

Suggestions for fly problem? by Brian Henderson
It's that time of year again and the flies are out in force this year and going after the ears of two of my dogs. I feel really sorry for them and wish there was some way to really keep the flies off but every product I've used has offered very temporary relief (less than an hour most of the time)...

aspirin or remidyl? by Dave
Rimadyl is more powerful than aspirin, and can be very effective for arthritis. It's definitely worth the money. Six years ago our dog Sherman, a Basset/Corgi mix, had arthritis. Aspirin didn't work, but with Rimadyl he had another 5 years of comfortable walking. One potential problem with Rimadyl...

How hot is too hot for dogs (at rest)? by Chas Jenkins
During the day, we have been keeping our two dogs (both approx. 7 years old--the boy is a lab/samoyed mix, 70 lbs; the girl is a bordie collie/shepherd mix, 60 lbs) in the garage. Plenty of water, nice clean smooth concrete floor, filtered light. Today I checked the thermometer in the garage: 85...

Help us get a dog park opened in Miami Beach (FL) by Charles Lavin
The North Beach Bark Park Project was established to help convince the City of Miami Beach (Florida) to open a Bark Park on the north side of the island. This is an area comprised mostly of multi-family buildings, with no open spaces where dogs can be legally off-leash. If you live in the North...

Tick? by Michael K McCleary
I am currently house-sitting a cut little 12 year old beagle mix, and just found a black bump on his ear. I first thought it was a tick, but it seems to have hair growing from/through it. Is this a tick? It is black, the size of a pea, and has no inflammation around it. The pup's owners are in...

Osteosarcoma by Jim
Max had his second chemo today. This time it was doxyrubicyn (sp). First was Cisplastin. This was a breeze. He was full of energy running around (three legs) and very hungry. It was like he enjoyed it.

Whippet with mystery illness by spinkydink
My sweet two year old male whippet was seen by the vet two weeks ago with a high fever - 105.5 degrees. He was lethargic, lacked appetite and had a stiff gait. He underwent x-rays, ultrasound and a barium series. A cbc indicated a high white count. He also received antibiotics and iv fluids. He...

Hypersensitive reaction? by Derfram Dunham
2 y.o. Shih Tzu. We found a small area on her left hip that had an irregular shaped roughness under the skin. The vet did a needle biopsy and found 'round' cells and suggested the tumor-like subskin growth be removed surgically. We did so. Pathology reported back that the removed material was...

CHOCOLATE and/or SODIUM...... bad for dogs? by Rocky
Leesa Taylor said in rec.pets.dogs.health: Does anyone know if CHOCOLATE is especially bad for dogs? I have heard that even small amounts of chocolate can be very bad for dogs.... any truth to this claim? Yes. Toxicity depends on the grade of the chocolate, especially its theobromine...

Alcohol/boric/gentian by Dave
Hello, I have used the alcohol/boric acid/gentian violet solution for my lab's ears and it has worked well. I've also read where this solution has been used on other areas...paws, for hotspots, etc. The ingredients would appear to be rather toxic, so I'd like to ask those who have tried it to...

shaving a samoyed by Vitmar5
I searched dejanews to see if this has been discussed in the past. It has (a year or two ago) but I could still use some advice. I have an old (14 years) samoyed. She is very arthritic and I'm sure that going to the groomer is torture now for her, so I hesitate to put her through that. Due to my...

Hyperactive old dog by fast
My dog is 11 years old and generally has been lazy & lethargic. But in the last week or two he has suddenly become hyperactive. At first I was alarmed because he was panting heavily. He has a heart murmur and I was worried it might be a symptom of deterioration. I took him to the vet, who said...
