i have been researching and looking for a small chihuahua. i have
looked into getting a toy or a tea cup size dog. the question i have is
alot of people say those dogs are phoney that chihuahua's only come in
long or short coats and everything else is a hype to get you to pay WAY
MORE. well my question is does ANYONE know where i can get a dog at
adescent price. i mean $1000.00up is alot for any dog. i just want a
small chihuahua but geeez thats alot of money. i can spend up to $250.
it will have a great home my husband is a truck driver and i am a stay
at home wife so i would just like a companion. thanks in advance..

yep! the people who are telling you that "tea cup" dogs are a
scam are 100% correct. there is no such thing as a tea cup
Chihuahua. and really, when you think about it, making
Chihuahuas even *smaller* doesn't make much sense, does it?
after a certain point, it negatively affects the health of the
dogs when they are bred to be microscopic.

$1000 *sounds* like a lot of money, but purchase price should
be the least of your concerns. health testing and temperament
are much more important than the initial cost of a pup. a
good resource for things to consider when you're searching
for a new dog is Diane Blackman's website:

http://www.dog-play.com/ethics.html

have you checked with shelters and rescue groups in your area?
also, check http://www.petfinder.org. keep in mind that while
rescues will usually not charge as much as breeders, they do
not give away dogs. the price they charge goes toward
covering the costs of caring for the dogs they place.
