dead fish smell

Hi, I have a 7 mo old beagle mix that I got from the humaine society 2
months ago. She has been spayed for about a month now, but last night
a dog owning friend of mine came over and noticed how her genital area
smelled like rotten fish! She said it had something to do with her
going into "heat" for the first time despite being spayed. Is this
true, can anyone explain this phenomenon? Thanks!

I don't think they can go into heat without their organs but even if they could
I would get her into the vet. She sounds as thought she could have an infection
that needs treatment.

She could have a vaginal infection......my little rescue developed one a
week or so after her spay.
Have her checked out soon.

Probably just her Anal glands that need to be expressed. If you don't know
how to do it.. have a vet do it. Have him show you how to do it also. It's
messy and smelly, but it will be cheaper for you to do it than having to
take the dog to the vet. I have 3 doxy'e and they need expressing about
every other month.

Have her checked out by a veterinarian as soon as you can. Sounds to
me like she just needs her anal glands expressed (as this smell used
to happen when my dog needed hers done), however, there is a chance it
could be something more serious.

Thank you so much for all the kind replies. I took my little Billy
(yes, it's a girl!) to see the vet right away and he was proud of me
for self-diagnosing her as having a vaginal infection. I didn't
bother to mention that half a dozen people told me that on the
internet... ;-)

He diagnosed this by taking a swab from inside her vagina, to which
Billy shrieked in pain. My vet said that indicates she sore in there,
because that shouldn't hurt. He then smeared the swab onto a slide
and showed me the results under the microscope. Lots of neutrophils
surrounding epithelial cells, an indication of infection. Oh and
Billy did have some whitish/green discharge at the end of her vulva,
which I had noticed before but didn't clue in that it might be
something of concern.

So her treatment is 10 days of antibiotics and I'm to clean the area
with gauze and an antiseptic wash twice a day. Poor thing still yelps
when I clean her down there...! Hope she gets better soon.
