Urgent, opinions please, dog ate rawhide
Hi,
if anyone is here right now, maybe you could help me out. I beleive my dog just swallowed a piece of rawhide without chewing it properly. I'm not sure how big the piece was, it was a little bigger than a square inch when I looked at her chewing, and a little while later it was all gone... So far she has never had a problem with rawhides, but this wasn't the pressed kind she usually gets. She is a small Belgian Shepherd Tervuren, about 20kg. What do you think, should I make her throw up or should I wait and see if it passes? Rosa |

My dog, Rusty, loves chewing on rawhides. His favorites are the chips but also occassionally enjoys the ones with the knots at each end. We try to watch him closely so that when the rawhide gets small enough (it all fits in his mouth), we try to take it away, but about once a week, he knows that we're coming for it and he quickly swallows them. He's never gotten sick or had any troubles with them because they've been well chewed (although still rather large) and he always gets a couple drinks afterwards too. I would just wait and keep your eye on your pup. Let us know what happens! Shelley & Rusty (who btw is a 14 pound dachshund so they're close to the same size) "Rosa Palmén" wrote in message ... Relax! Once it's past the throat where it could cause choking it's entered
the stomach where those awesome canine digestive juices will take care of it. You might watch for either constipation or diarrhea. "Rosa Palmén" wrote in message ... Yala is 20 kg, not pounds, so if Rusty can pass rawhide I guess my girl shouldn't have a big problem either. Rosa |

Remember, dogs bodies are built differently than humans. Wild and even
domesticated dogs swallow all sorts of thing whole without problems. I'd be concerned about non-organic things, but even the, rawhide should not be a problem as long as she did not choke. Give your dog a lot of bread, preferably soaked in milk. It will help
pad the piece of rawhide as it goes through his system. Will Carson wrote: Remember, dogs bodies are built differently than humans. BTW, it is NOT true that the dog would not have a problem. Many dogs
wind up with a tear from a ragged piece of bone or rawhide. Vets perform surgery quite often for this reason. Will Carson wrote: Remember, dogs bodies are built differently than humans.
