Shiloh Shepherds Revisited
I happened to stumble across this in Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiloh_Shepherd_Dog The Shiloh Shepherd Dog is powerfully built and well-balanced, with proud carriage and smooth, effortless gait. The male Shiloh stands 30 inches (76 cm) or more in height with a minimum of 28 inches (71 cm); he weighs 140 to 160 pounds (63.5-72.5 kg) with a minimum of 120 pounds (54.5 kg). The female is smaller, standing 28 inches (71 cm) or more in height with a minimum of 26 inches (66 cm) and weighing 100 to 120 pounds (45-54.5 kg) with a minimum of 80 pounds (36 kg). The minimum weight is astonishing but I found it interesting to note that Ma Barber has finally come out and admitted they are mixed with Mals although once again it appears to be rather ambiguous as they're mentioned as Giant Malamutes. I don't recall any Giant Malamute as a breed back in 1974 when she first began breeding oversized GSDs. "The Shiloh Shepherd Dog is a breed of dog that resembles a giant version of the German Shepherd Dog (GSD), although they possess a much gentler attitude inherited from the Giant Malamutes in their ancestry." -- Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...holy ****...what a ride!" |

Shiloh Shepherds Revisited
On 16 Jul 2006 03:11:02 GMT Terri whittled these words:
I happened to stumble across this in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiloh_Shepherd_Dog I know one of the involved contributors. That article was the cause of all kinds of argument. It was locked down for a while. -- Diane Blackman There is no moral victory in proclaiming to abhor violence while preaching with violent words. http://dog-play.com/ http://dogplayshops.com/ |

Shiloh Shepherds Revisited
"Terri" wrote in message ... I happened to stumble across this in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiloh_Shepherd_Dog We always have to remember that Wikipedia is a bit of a free for all, and full of misinformation, unsubstantiated opinions, and out and out lies. It is aggravating that the information there is going to be interpreted by some readers as fact, while those closer to the topic understand that it is often just one persons opinion. I often go to Wiki for a broad overview of a specific topic, but never for facts. -- Toni http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com |

I do know some people who've contributed but they just wanted to participate and didn't have particular knowledge of the subject they were writing about and consequently got some stuff significantly incorrect. Dogbreedinfo.com is pretty much the same story - whoever got there first contributed the breed descriptions and there's some wacky stuff in there. I think for reference materials to be reliable they need to be edited. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Bad policies lead to bad results. |

Admitting I haven't checked out these sites, I want to chip in that I have found books on dog breeds to be notoriously inaccurate as well. The mythology of a particular breed can get played up, emphasizing traits which are no longer common in the breed. Drawbacks get played down. I presume the editors and publishers want to avoid getting sued, but the prospective puppy-buyer goes unwarned about issues that might lead them to give up the dog. Amy Dahl |
