Default Expressing anal glands internally

My vet has shown me how to express my toy poodle's anal glands,
internally, external does not get it. I bought the gloves, baby wipes,
and KY and tried it this morning. I could not even get the finger
inserted into the anal opening. My fault, not the dog's. What's the
secret? This needs to be done weekly, so I have to learn to do this
for money reasons. The vet has no problems, the dog seems to relax for
him.
Thanks,
HJJ

It is possible that you're giving off anxiety vibes as you get ready to
do this, and your pooch is picking up on it and tightening it.

It is possible that as you get organized for this, your dog (poodles are
arn smart....) figures out what's coming and tightens up.

It is possible that as you handle the dog, you are doing everything to
increase anviety, not decrease it.

It is possible that you are moving into the rectum either too fast or
too slow.

It is possible that a second person present to either steady the dog or
distract it (as with a super treat to nibble at) would solve the
problem.

And all of those are great big guesses.
