Help! My Dachshund is not himself.
Hello,
I'd really appreciate hearing if this sounds familiar to anyone. My wife and I have an amazing 9 yr old Dachshund. He's a brown short hair medium size. Unfortunately, he has not been himself the past few weeks and I'm very concerned. I've had him at the vet and they did 2 blood test. The first test was so odd they repeated it. With the first the wondered if he had Addison's. After the second test though they ruled out Addison's and thought it might be a pancreatic (I think) problem where his body was over producing insulin thus lowering his blood sugar. For this they suggested spreading out his meals, which we've been doing for over a week now. He seemed to perk up at first but now seems about like before. Here's a quick run through of the symptom's. -recently become very lethargic doesn't want to walk anymore -looks depressed. -has drainage from one eye -gained about 5lbs. in 8 weeks -abdomen is always very tight as though he just ate a cow. -has gas like a male beer drinker. -recently started going into the garbage whenever we forget to close the pantry door. -very recently is waking us up in the night to go outside Tomorrow he's having an ultrasound done to look at his abdomen. Hopefully, we'll have good news and get to the bottom of this. If this sounds familiar to you I'd appreciate anything you would be willing to share. |

After reading your message I went to http://www.bennyhinn.org and submitted a

Howdy Rick, Our five year old standard Dachshund has given us a couple of scares with pancreatitis in the past year. The blood tests really pinpoint this problem with liver enzymes and typically with dehydration. The veterinarian involved believes that "people food" even in moderation and only a few times a month was to blame. His symptoms were extreme vomiting, whining while defecating, and panting in obvious distress even in an air conditioned house. He also had enlarged eyes (due to the dehydration). We rushed him to a 24 hour clinic upon his first attack. I had never seen a young dog so sick. I wish you the best with your dachsie. Our buddy has slowly recuperated over the last two months. He still does not have the walking stamina from before the first attack, but it is getting better. Carl |

If there's no vomiting I don't know why they're thinking pancreatic, unless the amylase was high in the bloodwork. Anything out of whack on the chem panel part of the bloodwork? ......Read about Addison's and Cushings he http://www.marvistavet.com/html/the_...b_library.html I'd have a talk with the vet and ask why they didn't test for Cushings. buglady take out the dog before replying |
