As Suzanne said, you, as Mandy's guardian, are in the best position to
know how to proceed--generally speaking. I think my response has made
you somewhat more sure about your wishes to treat Mandy. I hope so.

Your local shelter might have an un publicized trick up their sleeve to
help you get heartworm treatment at a discount. Even at cost, the meds
are expensive.

I hope you will keep us posted, and talk about the treatment experience,
because it intimidates most folks. If all goes well, you'll find it
surprisingly uneventful.

If cost is an issue had you thought about treating with ivermectin instead. It is cheaper, but slower. I have no personal experience to say yes it works or no it does not, but have read about it and claims made of its success rate. Just a thought.
