Default TIBETAN TERRER HEALTH PROBLEMS/ Have you got one??

Hi,

I am planning to obtain a Tibetan terrier within the next six months.
I have not seen this breed live yet, except for dogs on tv on the
Westminster dog show.

I had a large Lhasa Apso which weighed 22 pounds at five and a half
months and at adult weighed approx 29 pounds. Many thought she was a
Tibetan terrier as per her size and character. I think the real Lhasa
would be too small for my liking.

My Lhasa was on Iams for the better part of her life and after
contacting bladder calcium stone and a subsequent operation to remove
them she was put on some special diet. She lated contacted diabetes at
11 years old.

I want to be very careful in checking out the Tibetan terrier befor I
go ahead and purchase one.

I read on the web that they can have hip and eye problems.

Can someone who owns a Tibetan terrier tell me what kind of health
problems I might encounter and how to avoid them when purchasing one.

Roger

Six months may be a little short. In a similar situation, it
took me over a year from the time I started searching until my
Australian Shepherd puppy came home. Much of that time involved
locating a responsible breeder and then waiting for the next
planned litter.

Roger, ALL breeds are prone to hip and eye problems. Some more than others.
The best way to have a good chance of finding a healthy dog is by
interviewing breeders.

Find a breeder who does OFA on all of their breeding stock BEFORE they
breed.
Find a breeder who does CERF on their breeding dogs at least every two
years.

It seems there are good breeders testing them. Your object is to find one.
http://offa.org/stats.html#breed

TIBETAN TERRIER
Registry Rank Evaluations Percent Abnormal Percent Normal
BAER HEARING TEST 4 277 2.5 97.5
CARDIAC N/A 36 0.0 100.0
ELBOW N/A 84 4.8 95.2
HIPS 3306 5.8 93.7
LEGG-CALVE-PERTHES N/A 21 0.0 100.0
PATELLA 10 78 11.5 88.5
THYROID N/A 35 14.3 68.6

Unfortunately the CERF database is not forthcoming regarding statistics on
Tibetan Terrier eye issues

Great advice Matt.

I know of people who have been on waiting lists for specific breedings for
decades.
If you are less picky, then a year out is a good guess as to when to target
having a pet after the breeder search has begun.

From private email:

Matt,

Thanks for your input. I have already read about health
problems on web.

I would like to hear from Tibetan owners.

Thanks again.

It looks like you're not going to find many Tibetan Terrier
owners here. There may be a few lurkers, but I rarely see TTs
mentioned.

You probably need to attend some breed shows and subscribe to a
breed-specific email list. A minute of poking around in Yahoo
groups found a bunch:

Tibbies are a CHIC breed:

These are the tests the parent club think are important for Tibetan
Terriers to have before breeding.

Mildly off-topic: the nickname "Tibbies" is ordinarily used to describe
Tibetan Spaniels. Tibetan Terriers are coloquially known as Tibetans.
(Both are members of the Non-Sporting Group.)
