Default Chase

Our rescue group currently has a young dog that was picked up as a
stray.... nothing new there.... But Chase is a flipping genius of
sorts. Several times now, he has managed to push the tray in the bottom
of three different crates completely out through the slide space in
front.... which had been firmly closed. THEN! the little twerp has
dragged a throw rug from under his crate and an occupied crate next to
his completely into his crate. In a larger crate, after removing the
tray, he moved the crate laterally a couple of feet, around a corner and
over to a door.... And he's managed to move the bar on the crate door
to almost unlock it, then drag the door open.... into the crate.

Think this boy needs a JOB. Which we're working on....

There is a vid on youtube of a dog pushing out the tray, flipping the crate on its side, then leaving the crate through the bottom which had larger wire spacing. It took like 10 seconds, tops.

When we first got our Akita, she wasn't housetrained to our schedule. She also hated being alone (read: any physical barrier between her and at least one of her humans). She would simply ram the door of the crate until the latch let go. This happened three nights in a row, even after we started doing things like press the door against the couch to make it harder to open.. The last night, since we had been very careful to make sure the door was latched most accurately and securely, the welds on the doorframe broke instead. But at about that same time, with a judicious bit of catching her in the act, she was now reliable in the house. You could just about see it click: you mean if I can wait to go out, no crate? Deal!

Chase sounds interesting. I hope not in the Chinese proverb sense. Hope
he's well socialized. With those problem solving skills, he had better
not view how to get away from humans as the main problem to solve.

Nah..... At least at this stage of his young life, the biggest reward in
Chase's life is human contact. Makes Velcro look slippery. {grin} He
does have pretty strong prey drive (normal in terriers), and he saw a
squirrel both times he went over a fence....
