Default Need Rescue Help in North Carolina--Urgent

Yesterday there was a stray dog in David's yard, and since he didn't
know if the dog was friendly or not he didn't want to let his dogs out,
and in fact he couldn't really get out himself without either letting
them out or the other dog in. He called animal control who initially
said they wouldn't come pick up the dog unless it was caged (WTF?), but
then while he was talking to me the sheriff showed up. It turns out the
dog was very friendly, had been well socialized, and just wanted to
play...was wearing a collar but no tags (WTF again). Dog hopped right
up into the back of the truck and into the cage. Animal control took
him to the shelter.

However, since the dog is apparently a full-blooded pit bull, the
shelter he's in WILL NOT even attempt to adopt him out...if his owner
doesn't show up by Thursday, the dog will be put down. David called me
back in tears when he found this out. He's been trying to find
someplace to take the dog where it will at least have a chance at being
rehomed, but no luck so far...he did find a pit bull rescue, who said
they would foster the dog (they are full to overflowing themselves), but
he would have to (a) pay to have initial medical treatment and (b) drive
the dog there. The current shelter says they will release the dog to
David, but he can't take care of another dog, and he doesn't have money
to give the PB rescue for the medical checkup ($250). He could drive
the dog somewhere if it can be arranged for tomorrow.

He is in Davidson County (Thomasville). Everyplace he's called is
overflowing, and I realize this is a long shot, but if someone is
reading this and has recently had a really friendly pit bull go missing,
it's been found but you need to claim it *tomorrow*. A longer shot is
if anyone in that part of the state can help get this dog somewhere
where it won't be killed. David can drive to meet someone somewhere if
it happens tomorrow.

If David didn't already have two dogs he'd have taken this one in. We
both realize that this dog probably can't be saved, too many other
battles to fight, but neither one of us can rest without at least trying.

If anyone has any ideas, please email me (the address above is valid)
and, if necessary, I can put you in touch with David or him in touch
with you. I'll be checking the newsgroup, too. Also email me if the
above isn't clear or you need some information, I don't feel like I'm
making a lot of sense at the moment.

Kevin, I don't know what David has tried, but if he hasn't done it already,
he should advertise the 'Found' dog on Petfinder and Craigslist. Maybe put
some calls into nearby vets, groomers, pet supply stores (mom & pop type) to
see if anyone recognizes the dog. Also try EBBRR (http://www.ebbrr.org/)
They have a Yahoo! group presence as well, and they may be your best bet at
getting this dog's info among people that care.

It's too late. David had to let them know by 10 this morning.

Thanks...even though I never met this dog, and even David only saw him
for a little while, I feel awful about the whole thing.

Sometimes life just sucks.
