Default Chigger bites remedy or prevention

I adopted a fabulous Tibetan Terrier from
the SPCA here and took her to my elderly
mom up in Kansas. This stretch of the Midwest
(a band seemingly corresponding to the
northern and southern border of Missouri
and stretching across Kansas, Missouri,
and perhaps points east, but not extending
north to the Chicago area)
has lots of nasty insects, including these little
things. They are impossible to spot, hide out in
grass, and once on your body, bite you in places
where there is likely to be friction--the armpits,
groin, back of your knee, etc.

Anyway, the dog is enjoying life up there
except for the chigger bites. The groomer
is recommending some chemical treatment
of the back yard. We are wary of that idea.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

There's a point where that is the best solution, especially since
Chiggers are nasty to people as well. Follow the instructions (let dry
before allowing dog on area) and get bug free. I'd rather risk
chemicals on the lawn than more chemicals directly on the dog. Many
advantages, like stopping the breeding cycle, at least in your yard.
