How long until Deramaxx effects kick in? Related to stomach upset?
Greetings all!
Questions first, context later: How long does it take for the effects of Deramaxx to kick in? Does it have any tendency to upset a dog's stomach or otherwise make a dog reluctant to eat? My dog Cody is a 15.5 year old australian shepherd who weights about 55 pounds and who is tolerably fit and healthy for a dog her age. However, she has some noticeable weakness in her left hing leg, which we suspect is related to something the vet diagnosed as "intervertebral disk disease" (looked to me like what we humans would call a slipped disk) a few years ago. As a result of this condition, in which some material (cartilage, bony material...not sure) occasionally presses on the nerves in her spine, she used to have some very painful, nearly paralyzing episodes that would take a few days to run their course (fortunately she only had two or three such episodes a year). Once we put her on Rimadyl (maybe a year and a half ago), the episodes stopped. The weakness we are now seeing is different from her previous problems in some important ways...it is chronic rather than acute, and there does not appear to be much pain associated with the weakness....but I still think there is something pressing on the nerves. The vet put her on Deramaxx, and she has been on it about 8 days. I haven't seen any improvement. How long should I wait before we try some different med? What meds should we try next? What about something like prednisone? She has been very uneager to eat recently, and this may not be related to the Deramaxx, but is it the case the Deramaxx has a side effect of upsetting a dog's stomach? Cody probably has some arthritis, but except for her hindquarters, she has decent musculature and flexibility for a dog her age, and gets a decent amount of exercise; she is creaky, but not alarmingly so. She is on estrogen (once a week), PPA (every day), Soloxine (for thyroid, light dose every day), glucosamine/chondroiton, and the 50 mg of Deramaxx (once a day). Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Chuck |

Deramaxx should NOT take this long to help. You should have noticed some
improvement in 48 hours at the most. When Barney was off this medication and taking pred for his cancer he was back to his old self in less than 36 hours after restarting the Deramaxx. He went from extreme pain and barely walking back to running in the yard in less than 2 days. Anytime a dog takes this powerful of a drug and develops stomach issues the medication should be stopped. I know you say she had stomach problems before but this concerns me because one of the first signs of problems with this drug is stomach problems. When taking Deramaxx or Rimadyl you need to keep and eye on her stools for signs of blood in the feces or urine and any in any vomit that may occur. If you see even the tiniest bit of blood stop the medication and get her to an emergency vet ASAP because these are all signs of internal bleeding. Also check their gums daily to make sure they are a healthy pink. Pale gums are also a sign of internal bleeding. My dog Barney took both medications over a 5 year period without any type of side effects but I never left my guard down and watched him daily for side effects because I knew the results if I didn't catch it soon enough. In addition to the drugs you list I would ask the vet about giving the dog some Cimetadine daily for her stomach as a preventative to stomach ulcers. Celeste wrote in message oups.com...
