I saw that article. We, too, have spent a goodly sum on our pets' health
when it was necessary to keep them in good shape, and free from infection.
I continue to be annoyed, however, by people who put animals through long
and painful procedures merely to prolong life.

There's a nice article yesterday's Washington Post on
thinking about expensive medical treatments for dogs. A
particularly nice quote: "A dog is a dog, which turns out to
be more than enough."

MOST people make the best decisions they can with the information they
have. MOST people do not put their companions through "long and painful
procedures *merely* to prolong life." (emphasis mine). Many people might
make a different decision than you would. But I would be very wary of
judging the decisions of others.

As I am sure that they are annoyed by people who, at the first sign, have
their pets killed to spare them pain and suffering.

In the end, it is up to each individual person to make the judgement calls
for their pets on when "enough is enough".
