Default blindness and the day/night cycle

We have a beagle/bassett mix who became blind @ 2 years ago. Recently he
started getting up between 3 and 4am every morning to (legitimately) go
outside. We've tried keeping him awake late, etc., to no avail. If we
don't let him out, he whines, no matter if he's in the crate or out. This
is driving us crazy, but I'm not sure if this a training issue, or an issue
of his day/night cycle being thrown out of kilter.

Can anyone help?

Have you noticed if he's urinating more frequently in general? How old is
he? If he's elderly then it may be an age-related issue in that he just
can't hold it longer than that anymore. If you haven't stopped water intake
after a certain time (say 8pm) then that may be a possible fix...assuming
he's not active later at night and in need of hydration.

A vet visit is a wise idea at this point. He could have a urinary tract or
bladder infection or it could be something else medical. Rule out a medical
issue if possible because you'll be wasting your time and his by treating it
as behavioral when its not.
