Default Consumption of ephedrine for long

Hi everybody,
I have a female dog, a Springer Spaniel, who underwent an operation to make
her sterile. The operation succed but after that, the dog had urine loss
almost constantly. We started giving her mg 12,5 of ephedrine twice a day
(TOT mg 25 every day); since she takes ephedrine she has no more loss but
the veterinary said also that it is not healthy for the dog going on taking
it and it could also cause an untimely death. I'd like to know if it's true
and if is possible to replace ephedrine with a less dangerous medicine.
The dog lives inside. She has been taking ephedrine for 3 years and now she
is 6 years old.
Please, if you know something about it or you have already had problems like
this, let me know. It is very important for me and for Penny too!
Thanks a lot.
