Default Only half potty trained...

My dogs are both only half potty trained. I don't know what it is
that I am doing wrong, but I have a bell at the back door that both dogs
have learned to ring when they want out, and they will do this half the
time, and the other half they just go in the den! We even have a room
off of the laundry room, (where they sleep and stay when we are gone)
with paper down for them to use if they are up for the night or if it's
raining, but for some reason, they use the paper sometimes, but they
still go in the den as well. We don't spank them but we do lower our
voices and point to it and say, "NO!" and immediately take them outside.
They always get a treat as soon as they come back in, if they use the
potty. What could be holding them back from only using the potty
outside?

i would start over house training from scratch, as if they were
completely unhousebroken. don't give them the opportunity to go in
the house. every accident they have indoors will put their house
training back. either tether them to you with leashes or crate them
when you can't supervise them. since there are two of them, you might
want to crate one and tether the other, rotating them frequently.

it's important that you go out *with* them. when they relieve
themselves outside, do a silly happy dance and tell them what
amazingly, wonderfully, good dogs they are. really, you can't over do
the praise enough.

take them out fairly frequently--after naps and meals, and every
couple of hours otherwise. they're both old enough to hold it
overnight, but make sure they don't have free-range of the house
overnight until they are 100% housebroken. crate them or have them
sleep in the *closed* bedroom with you.

also, if you don't have them on a feeding schedule, i'd suggest doing
so. regular input means regular output, which will help with house
training.

Also, make sure you are doing the praise and treat routine outside as
soon as they do their business outside. When you give the dogs a
treat when they come inside, they may not know that they are being
treated for going potty outside. The last thing they did before you
gave them a treat was to come inside. You want to be absolutely sure
that they associate the act of pottying outside with the treats and
praise and have no doubt at all that going potty outside makes you
very happy with them. As it is, it sounds like there might be enough
time between the pottying and the treating that the lesson you are
trying to teach is lost or weakened. Their response is also weakened,
since sometimes they ring to go outside and other times they don't
bother.

Also, putting papers in the area where they eat and sleep is not a
good idea. They will be more likely to choose a spot away from eating
and sleeping spots to potty as dogs don't like to soil their dens. If
you want to set up an indoor potty spot, put it somewhere else or put
the food somewhere else.

Clean the den well with enzymatic cleaners like Nature's Miracle and
block it off by shutting the door or putting up another barrier like a
baby gate so that habit cannot be reinforced any more than it already
has been.

yes! i didn't make that clear, but *immediate* praise/treat is what's
called for.

another thing that occurred to me is that it would be a good idea to
have both dogs checked by their vet for UTIs. it's unlikely that they
both developed UTIs simultaneously, but if one dog has an infection
and is peeing in the house, the other dog might follow suit.

Kind of like if you have a foster dog in the house with a marking
issue and suddenly perfectly housetrained dogs start peeing in the
house in the same rooms the other dog did? Not that I would know
anything about that kind of thing. At least not recently, thank
goodness!

Dog fostering is just a scam set up by the Nature's Miracle people to
sell their product by the gallon.

Thanks guys, I have been taking their treats outside with us when
they go. I never thought that I was only rewarding them for coming
inside and going up into their room. Makes sense. I hope we can get
back on track.
