Retrievers who don't retrieve
Greetings:
Janet P. mentioned in another thread that her Golden doesn't like to fetch balls, he prefers oblong objects, bird shaped. This made a little light go on above my head, as Queenie won't retrieve the tennis ball for anything, and I kind of thought she just didn't like to retrieve. So what are good, bird-shaped toys that one can chuck a fair distance? I would like to be able to run some of that energy off without my needing to run. Also, does anyone have any tips for encouraging retrieving behavior among the reluctant (half) retrievers? (I'm not into sports involving hunting/live prey, and that's a restriction I'm placing on the Queener too. Except for chasing squirrels in the yard, they always get away.) Thanks in advance. -- Catherine & Zoe the cockerchow & Queenie the black gold retriever & Rosalie the calico |

clicked their heels and said: So what are good, bird-shaped toys that one can chuck a fair distance? I Franklin was with me in the garage yesterday, and found his stuffed latex duck. I can't remember where I got it, but it's latex and has stuffing in it, to feel "duck like". He ran around with it, and when asked, delivered to hand at heel, something I haven't asked of him in months, so that was a nice little light-bulb moment! Still, it goes away when we're not fetching - too tempting to rip the wings off. Then there's Dokken ducks http://www.gundogsonline.com/ProdDtl...9&iDeptID=1400 a bit pricey and perhaps not for play, since they are heavy, but they come as close to real duck weight. We have 2, but only take them out for drills, not fun retrieving. We use bumpers for that, and the above described fun-duck. Of course, my dogs live for tennis balls too - actually - haven't found anything that Franklin won't retrieve if asked to, so...... -- Janet B www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/bestfr...bedience/album |

But bumpers -- I didn't know what they were. I will procure one as a test. Thanks! -- Catherine & Zoe the cockerchow & Queenie the black gold retriever & Rosalie the calico |

I may have gotten the duck at Walmart or Target for all I know - i"ve had it quite some time. It is easy to wash off and he loves it, what more do I want! Bumpers - white ones are softer ("puppy" bumpers) for a dog new to retrieving. You can get them a lot of places. Forget the canvas - they'll get muddy and gross and will eventually dry rot as well...... -- Janet B www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/bestfr...bedience/album |

I like to think I would bring the canvas one inside so that it would last, but I really can't count on my remembering to do that. So plastic it is. I'll start with a white one. -- Catherine & Zoe the cockerchow & Queenie the black gold retriever & Rosalie the calico |

Wojo will climb into the van to bring them out so that they can play with them. The bumper is what we used to get Trip swimming after his cruciate surgery. Beth |
