I don't believe it's all false and exaggerated and a propaganda campaign. I do believe that it's being exaggerated by some people in support of a propaganda campaign and that anti-speuter stuff is currently a matter of fashion in some circles. I also know that humans are really terrible at evaluating risk and in particular tend to exaggerate the likelihood of exceedingly rare events while downplaying the likelihood of common ones. I think the anti-neuter people are overhyping some valid research results. I also think (heck, I know) that people tend not to think about risk in terms of tradeoffs. I'd be very curious to know the incidence of accidental litters versus the incidence of orthopedic or other problems caused by neutering. The problem isn't with the research, it's with its interpretation, particularly by people without a research background and who don't know how to look at data. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

This girl comes swanning up with her whippet, and says, (and this is the first time she's even *seen* us mind you,) "Why does your dog still have those tumors?" (and when did that get to be a popular saying anyway?). Maybe because males have two-more than females? That's why I mentioned that perhaps my female friend was just a bit misanthropic. She has had several unsuccessful relationships with men and I sense some almost maniacal glee when she mentions having an intact male dog castrated. I Paul, you're an idiot. Thank You Nick |
