Barrow Co., GA Banning Breeds
There is currently talk in Barrow County, GA of banning a list of breeds
being labeled as dangerous. Boxers, Rotties, Danes, Pit Bulls and a few others are currently up for the label. I'm not certain about ownership rights with regards to owning one of the breeds but it does mean that one turned into the shelter, or picked up as a stray, will be immediately euthanized. This includes mixes that look like one of these breeds. -- Tara |

Tara,
Without getting into the good or bad points (perceived or actual) of any breed I am just going to pass along that this is a common practice at many shelters. I am currently in the middle of an even more astonishing "policy": Dogs must be temperment tested to get along with other dogs, children and CATS before they will be adopted. Other dogs and kids I can understand. Cats I can't. It should be easy enough to inquire if the prospective family has a cat. Oh well.!! chuck petterson Rescure Bus driver "Tee" wrote in message ... Oh I know the shelters will have no choice but to euth. immediately any dog on a banned or dangerous list. The problem is the proposed legislation itself. The even bigger problem, right now, is that the county isn't releasing details of the meeting or the proposal to the public. It was definitely proposed, definitely discussed, but the public has yet to hear any details or whether it was approved, turned down or is still under discussion. There are 8 breeds on the list and I heard today that Mals & AmStaffs make up two more of them. I just don't want to see it happen. It'll set precedence for more BSL in that state and possible carryover into FL, SC, MS & AL. AFAIK it'd also be the first time the Boxer is labeled as dangerous. So many rescues pull from Barrow County. Many of the Pit Bulls, Boxers, AmStaffs & Rotties are taken by rescue and *usually* taken into other states. What they need is an effective leash law since none exists. Let the owners allow their dogs to run the county and get into trouble and then blame entire breeds for it -- Tara |

Our local shelter used to have similar policies - I don't believe Danes were included, but the others you mentioned including Boxers (!?!) and a few others like Chows were not available to the public. They would be released to rescues (and usually only Boxer rescue had any space) or would be euthanized. Now, they do adopt those breeds out, after a home check is done, which tends to weed out the folks with sketchy motivations from even trying. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of good homes. Yeah, there's never enough good homes. I don't have an issue with euthanasia. Its necessary although I wish it weren't. I just can't imagine 8 breeds suddenly becoming "dangerous" to the point of being banned and euth'd on the spot. And to include mixed breeds. There, supposedly, will not be an owner reclaim time. If a dog is picked up and looks like one of the 8 banned breeds then its lights-out for that dog. I can't imagine Boxers or Danes on the list either, or Mals for that matter. I've never heard of any temp. problems in the Boxers coming out of there although I have heard of the "make em mean and sic em on people" mentality wrt to Pits and AmStaffs. That's not to say its true but some of the rescuers who know the county's dogs well have indicated that's a problem. Its pretty much all rural with dogs running loose alot of the time. They get into packs and something bad inevitably happens. Again though, this is second-hand information of observations from people who have experience there. What really gets me is that so many of the breeds being proposed are the ones that so many out-of-state rescues work their tails off to pull & transport. If the rescues are taking them so steadily then why are they targeting them for BSL? Maybe Manadero (Robin) has some more info since she lives in the state. -- Tara |

I'm in Georgia, but another part of the state. This hasn't made the
news yet in our area.... The state federation of dog clubs usually lands on this stuff like a ton of bricks.... and as this is in the Hotlanta area, the kennel clubs in and circling the city are likely to get in some licks themselves. Breed bans have failed in all but one county... and I can't recall which one that is right off the bat. The state has an excellent dangerous dog law and generally what has happened is that the good citizens have told their representatives to enforce the law before they go off half-cocked. Barrow County's animal shelter is high-kill... and animal control is greatly underfunded.... The county is having all sorts of growing pains. A friend of mine in Oklahoma used to breed and show Danes. His 10yo son was playing in the yard with one or two of them when one dog tossed it's head. It hit the boy's head just wrong and snapped his neck.... and he was dead in seconds. His mom went into a panic, so couldn't even get the dogs put up. When help arrived, the big male went into protective mode and wouldn't let the EMTs get close to the downed child, so the dog was shot by the police. He got rid of all of the Danes... This finished up the collapse of their shakey marriage. He now has Cockers. So Danes CAN be dangerous, just through their size and normal activity... no teeth involved. Jo Wolf Martinez, Georgia |

It certainly hasn't stopped anyone from owning Dobes, Rotts, etc in this area. I'll have to look into that. Jo, Barrow Co. has a Yahoo Group and there's been some small discussion on this. "Jo Wolf" wrote in message ... .. So Danes CAN be dangerous, just through their size and normal activity... no teeth involved. I can only imagine that, simply because of their size, Danes can definitely be a handful in the wrong hands. But, in saying that, ANY dog in the wrong hands can be dangerous--it's just the sheer size that makes it all that much worse. I wonder if the Dane might be on there because of things like I've seen around here, people purposefully breeding Pits with Danes for guard dogs (I just saw *two* seperate advertisements for this mix in a NW farm newspaper). I was in an obedience class with a pair of young Danes & a husband & wife. These two were horridly on-leash aggressive at the start of the class. But, let them off-leash and they were friendly & playful. They ended up being two of Coda's (who is picky about his playmates!) favorite playmates in that class. Shelly & The Boys |
