Subject: Home Visit Checklist?
From: Gwen Watson Date: Fri, Sep 26, 2003 2:12 PM Message-id: Suja wrote: See above. Apartment dwellers can do the safest thing for the dog and exercise it on-leash. For that matter, I have never understood the fenced-in yard requirement of some rescues. The yard doesn't exercise the dog, the people do. Bingo and that so happens to be one of my pet peeves about rescue. The whole double standard thing. And yes a fence/yard doesn't exercise dogs people do. I have several beefs with the methods in place and this has to be the biggest one of all. So going to a persons house that doesn't have a fence should mean squat anymore than it does for people with apartments, if in fact the HC'r is doing their job which is making sure said adopter is going to keep the dog on a leash when outside. Gwen I adopt at least a third of my dogs to people that live in the city and the dogs have a great life! I DO NOT adopt to people that have a home and I see that the last dog had a tie out or kennel, and they say things like 'My dog was stupid,my dog got his exercise in the fenced backyard,my dog didn't ride in the car.... I totally agree, no homecheck was done for me. Jerry who is our local BC rescue said she had a sixth sense and although she does homecheck she has only been wrong once in all the time she has been in rescuing. I have had 2 dogs from her and will soon be getting dog no 3. She has also become a good friend but if I'm not careful I think I could become an extension of her rescue centre ;-) Shell Well that does happen. MANY of the people that got a dog from me (first time dog owners too) have goten one more and then one more, till they have become a four dog family. What works for me and my dogs besides the GESTAPO thing, is being for the people and the dog AFTER the adoption when there WILL ALWAYS be a problem that needs to be smoothed out. From: "Alison" Date: Sat, Sep 27, 2003 5:22 AM Message-id: "Kind2dogs" wrote in message ... Is this for a shelter or a private rescue? . The shelter should advise you of what they are looking for and should have already interviewed the potential owner. Why would it make a difference if it was a shelter or private rescue? Paulette~ Hi Paulette, I just thought that shelters and and animal societies have guidelines you have to follow and (in the UK)they usually interview the potential owners before the home check so really the home check is checking for safety and that the people are who they say they are , just things like that . I always do the phone interview first, and then a home visit at my house for them to visit the dogs, and then a home visit, usually, and definitely if something is not *right* I will do a home visit. By private rescue I meant someone who has to rehome their dog or has rescued one and is not backed by an organisation . Well take it form me I do it on my own for my Chessies and believe you me I am *backed* : ) They might not have done an interview or know what to ask or look for , so your home check would be much more thorough . I have said so may times that a home visit or an evaluation is only as good as the volunteer. So I am not big on ANY rescue person doing ANYTHING if there is not a mentor there to check over what the newbie volunteer does or does not do. Sometimes IME I have talked the person out of a dog, PERIOD. Sometimes they would need to go SO FAR AWAY they are too lazy to do so.
