I
finally gave up and asked the owner. Made perfect sense once she told me.

I was reading Dog Fancy at the vet's the other day, and they had a
feature on Scotties. On one page I was startled to see a picture
of one or two black Scotties--and a white one! The article stated
that allowed colors are black and wheaten. Sure enough, the "white"
one was actually pale buff, and there was another photo of a light-
colored one.

I never knew they came in any other color than black.

That's right! It was more of a buff colored dog than pure white. I actually
asked her if it was a Scotty X Cairn. Cool looking dogs. She actually had
two of them.

Come to think of it, I got the colors crossed in my head. The Mini Schnauzer
I saw was more of a pure white, and the Scotties were more fawn colored.
Thanks for triggering a correction in my memory.

I groom a couple of wheaten Scottie's. Oddly, they are each more pleasant
tempered than all the black or brindle Scottie's rolled into one. I wonder
of it holds true in all the wheatens?

And as far as white Miniature Schnauzers, they are all the rage here-
terrible soft coats that usually yellow up in a most unappealing manner.
They are invariably puppy mill dogs sold as "Rare!!", and most people that
own them think they have found the jewel of all dogs accidently left
undiscovered in a pet shop. A few local BYB's have lately co-opted them and
are now cranking them out in record numbers.

White is a non-standard color in this breed over there, and so whites are
produced mostly by puppy millers. Some whites might even be crosses. But
here in FCI countries white is a totally accepted color nowadays, and
whites are bred and shown "normally". I think that most of the "pet
quality" Mini Schnauzers I've seen have been black, and the two rarer color
morphs, black/silver and white, are on average slightly better, closer to
ideal breed type.

Here's a good-looking white, at least I think so:

and here's a black/silver:

Very nice looking but the coat looks very silky at least in the photo.
Of course it's impossible to tell, but that doesn't look like the
correct hard Terrier coat of the schnauzers I see here.

I don't know where that photo came from, but I didn't post it.
i am much too diehard a traditionalist to call a white Schnauzer
good-looking.
g

The dog in the foreground looks like a Soft Coated Wheaten came to visit the
barn at some point, and the one in the background has far too little leg and
is much too broad across the chest- I'd guess a Westie visited that one's
mum.
They don't look like USA Schnauzers at all- ours have become much more
refined.

Hmmm. They aren't here. They are split by size but not color.

Plus, the three sizes are *not* considered to be different breeds, at least
not by the AKC; they're only divided for showing purposes, and I'm fairly
sure that you can breed one size to the other without there being any
differentation in pedigree.

However, DON'T get me started on the idiocy of the AKC "Parson Russell
Terrier" and "Russell Terrier", which are size & build variations of the
Jack Russell Terrier.

However, apricot poodles are frowned upon in the breed (I don't know if
it's an allowed color)

It is absolutely an allowed color; why do you say it's "frowned upon"?

and piebald are strictly prohibited.

Parti-colored dogs aren't allowed in the breed ring, but they have their
supporters & breeders.

The "correct" term for that is "wheaten" - which I only know 'cos I've met
one at an agility trial.

Heh. Fortunately, the first one I saw was with someone who has always run
Scotties, so it was intutively obvious what he was.

The first I heard of the "Parson Russell Terrier" was an announcement
in the AKC Gazette published in April a couple of years ago. I showed
it to DH, and said, "check out this April Fool's joke."

I still can't get used to the idea it's serious.

Similar things happened on several JRT lists, due to the coincidence of
the name change being officially announced on April 1. However, it makes
sense in that the AKC dogs ARE a sub-set of Jack Russells (most from JRTCA
stock), and now have a closed gene pool.
What boggles my mind is the introduction now of the "Russell Terrier",
which is nothing more or less than Jack Russell Terriers who happen to be
under 12" tall, with backs a bit longer than height at withers. Quite a few
of them would be perfectly acceptable under JRTCA standards, and in fact
some are from JRTCA lines.

I just looked at two 8-mo-olds at a JRTCA breeder in VA, who are well
within JRTCA standards; they'll be right around 12" when grown, which is
considered medium, and are very slightly longer than tall - perfectly
proportioned, to my eyes. ("Cleo" and "Clipper" on this page; they're about
5 months in the pictures. http://www.smilinjackfarm.com/for_sale.html )

Another prospective buyer was looking for a dog to compete in AKC agility
with, and if she'd taken the female planned to ILP her as a Russell Terrier.

I ended up not taking one home with me, btw, because I didn't see a certain
mental/personality quality I'm looking for; can't quite define it in words,
but focus would be part of the description. Whatever it is, I saw it in
Rocsi at 7 weeks, and in Brenin at 8 months, even though he was utterly
untrained and near-berserk from lack of exercise and mental stimulation.
The only concrete thing I can say is that they had little or no interest in
the toy I tried to play with them with (a mini Cuz, which most JRTs LOVE),
and although they very much wanted attention from humans, neither of them
ever really LOOKED at me.

Yep, that would do it for me too...especially if they ignored a Cuz,
those incite mine to a frenzy.
