New AKC Lure Coursing Program
AKC has had Lure Coursing titles for sighthounds for many years... They
follow a zig-zag course laid with a strong line towed by an electric motor, using a white garbage bag as the "rabbit". Gorgeous event to watch. But all kinds of dogs love to chase things, and some sighthound clubs and terrier clubs have offered this activity just for the fun of it at their events for a long time. It's been very popular. Now the AKC has started the Coursing Ability Title (CAT) program for all breeds and mixed breeds. Three successful runs are required for the title. No training required for the dogs. But owners will need to learn how to hold and release the dogs, and develop quick ways of reclaiming their excited dogs at the end of each run..... Muzzles are required. Box muzzles or Greyhound racing muzzles required.... not the soft wrap around kind. Jo Wolf Martinez, Georgia |
