Default Torn ACL in Airedale

I have a question for you experts. We're certainly not positive, but
we think our Airedale blew out his knee last night. He actually ran
into a sliding glass door, but we think that he was pushing off hard
(running) with his feet still on the ground and when he crashed his
knee crumpled under him. He is unable to put any weight on the leg at
all, but is able to hobble around on three legs. We are able to touch
the leg all the way from the hip joint down to his foot and he doesn't
even flinch....shows no signs of pain. And yet, he won't even touch it
to the ground. Could he have torn his ACL?

If so, can anyone give me an estimate of what we're looking at
surgery-wise, money-wise, and recover-wise. He's almost ten years old
and in excellent health. His weight is very good as well. He's just
such an awesome dog.....sigh.

We're in the Orlando area...should we take him to our regular vet or
just go directly to a specialist. This thing has surgery written all
over it.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I don't know about vets in that area I'm guessing it's going to be more than
what I paid. When I had Barneys repaired the last time it cost aroung
800.00.

The sooner you get him to and "orthopedic vet" and find out exactly what is
wrong the better. Hopefully it's not torn and just really banged up.

Could be ACL or another orthopedic problem. Whatever it is, get to a vet
ASAP so that you can first get him on some medication to make him
comfortable. If surgery is an option and his aging organs will allow for
general anesthesia (blood work will show this), then get to it. Hobbling
along on those three legs are putting extra strain on them that will also
eventually cause injury to them over time.

Some general vets do ACL surgery and do it well. Others refer to an
orthopedic surgeon. Best to find out soon.

Our malamute/GSD mix had his cruciate surgery around Christmas and it cost
around 1K. In this area (Washington DC/NoVA) you can expect to pay from
that to $2500.00 depending on the vet that you use.

Good luck. Our boy recovered from his surgery quite nicely.

Thanks everyone. Kramer is at our Vet's office now for an exam and
X-rays. We'll wait for the verdict and see if our Vet (who is quite
good), will want to do any required surgery himself or refer out to a
specialist. Whatever it is....we'll take care of it. He's like our
son, and we'll make sure he gets any surgical procedure he needs.
Seems that the cost pretty much runs the gamut. It doesn't matter
really, because we'll pay whatever it takes. Thakns for your thoughts
everyone.
