Default Ear Mites

We are fairly sure that my Lab mix has ear mites and we have an appointment
tomorrow to confirm it and get medication for the problem.

He only appears to have them in his left ear as the right ear looks clean as a
whistle but I'm sure I'll have to medicate both ears at the same time.

I've never had to deal with ear mites before and wanted to know with the proper
medication, are they easily treatable and once gone, do they stay away or can I
expect them to come back?

Is there any preventative measures I can take to make sure my guy doesn't have
to deal with them again?

Thanks for everyones help.
JakesMom
