Licking paws-how to tell if allergy or boredom?
My little dog has all kinds of allergies, but just now, 6 mos after I
adopted her, I believe we've improved the situation by 80% or so, perhaps more. Ok - the question, she still is licking her paws (but less than before) and I notice it's after long periods while I'm at home with her, of waiting for me to finish what I'm doing. I'm not sure, but I'm noticing a little pattern here, although she will lick at other times also. Is there a way to differentiate licking from allergy vs boredom? -- Do not email if posting response. Antihistamines normally help with allergies. Learning to do tricks normally helps with boredom. Try both. See which one works, and you have your answer. --Lia |

Most times, if it is allergies, the dog will lick after being outdoors on
the grass or walking around on carpet. They will sit down somewhere and start washing their paws because they are itchy. If she's bored then the licking will probably start up after she's been sitting for awhile or sleeping and wakes up to see you haven't moved - the licking will start. The suggestion to try an anti-histamine is worth a try. Benadryl for Children is good. 1 pill for breakfast for 2 days then see what the rest of the week brings. If licking persists, then try getting her more mental stimulation like dog sports or teaching her tricks, etc. Give that a week and see which worked best. It is entirely possible, this time of year, that you could be dealing with a bit of both.
