can someone tell me how much nizoral to give my 95 pound golden retriever?
my vet told me to give him 500mg twice a day for Malassezia dermatitis,
however this is the same vet that gave him antibiotics only to make it
worse. i have the drug but i will not go back to this vet.

thanks,
frank

Frank, my name is Marla and I have been a veterinary practice manager for
8years. In addition to medications, have you conisdered an testing.
Sometimes a culture and sensitivity is beneficial to find out which
medications the condition will respond to.

I believe the dose is 1000mg every 12 hours. Don't have my pharmaceutical
book at home tonight. Will check further tomorrow at the office. I will
try to let you know something tomorrow night.

Remember to get a complete copy of y our pet's medical records
including any diagnostics and treatments o that your new vet can forego
repeating the same procedures.

Sincerely,
Marla

I believe the dose for a 95 lb dog would be closer to 1000mg every 12 hours,
but I would need to consult my pharmaceutical reference at the office
tomorrow. Also, in your pet's case, a culture and sensitivity might be
beneficial to find which medication the dermatitis will respond to, rather
than all the guess work.

Frank, I can't sit and passivly read the replies to your post. Think
about what your
asking. You are asking people about drugs who you don't personally
know, much
less people who you can not verify if they have even been to veterinary
medical school.
Much less if they have a license to practice medicine. So you will
administer a perscription
drug to your animal based on this advice? Thank god it's not morphine!

Now. Dogs, like humans react to drugs such as antibiotics. This is why
your human doctor
asks you if your allergic to any drugs. Dogs can't tell us if they are
or not. Your vet started
exactly where any vet should start. RX the antibiotics to control any
bacterial infection, boost
the immuned system, and assist in the dogs own natural healing. Ok,
your dog did not react
well to that antibiotic. Take note so that you can inform any other vet
you might see. So the
next drug on the list is going to be used. Administer it exactly as
your vet has told you to do.
It is after all a controlled drug (available by RX only). Using a
controlled drug outside it's
intended use is not legal. This includes, but is not limited to, the
prescribed doesage. Don't
trust people who claim to be in the veterinary business on the internet.
People that are
really in the business know better than to give or calculate dosages.
That would be
performing medicine, most cases without a license. No real doctor or
tech that I know is
willing to go to jail or loose a license like that.

Furthermore, god forbid, if something bad did happen to your dog. You
will have NO legal
recourse. All the doctors lawyer has to do is show, via lab work, the
drugs where not given
properly. You loose, and pay the court costs. Stick to the treatment
plan exactly as outlined
by your vet. A few hours of research will show you how important that
advice is.

Have you thought about contacting your local referral center? Find a
board certified specialist
for the dogs problem. Thats how veterinary medicine is done these days.
Your pets insurance
should handle the costs, however in most cases the specialist is less
expensive than a regular
vet. How much lab work was done? How do you know it's Malassezia
dermatitis? Those are
the first questions the doctor or tech should be asking if they have a
high quality practice. As
with all science, they should rerun the lab work to see if results can
be duplicated.

Good luck.
