Default Dachshund Chihuahua mix - Ripped off?

Hi guys,

I bought my first puppy last week. We went into a pet store and she
couldn't stop begging for the dog so I caved in and purchased the
Dachshund Chihuahua mix for roughly a $1000.00 bucks.

I showed some of my dog lover friends and they freaked out how much I
paid for it. Do you think I got ripped off? My friends said I did. If
that's true I'm a bit angry but I already love my dog too much to argue
to give it back. Any feedback on this would be great.

Thanks

wow, a grand?
in the uk you would pay a grand for a really rare dog. the pet store saw
you coming im afraid.
plus as shorepanix said there are puppy farms some of which we are
investigating that sell to pet shops.
did you know harrods was supplied by a pup farm in north wales?
please just dont buy from a pet store again. has he been vet checked yet?
and use a good wormer - can you get drontal in the states?

in the uk we could ask trading standards to become involved or the
citizens advice, is there something like that who could take up your
case?
if there is then keep all paper work from the vets as it could help
strenghten your case

what case? it sounds to me like the OP willingly handed over
the money. as much as i loathe puppy mills and pet stores
that sell mammals, i really can't see holding them responsible
when people have buyer's remorse. it's the buyer's
responsibility to do his/her research ahead of time. if the
buyer can't be bothered to do that, it's his/her own fault.

now, if the puppy were misrepresented, that'd be another
matter. the OP has said nothing that leads me to believe
anything of the sort happened, though.

Well, he knew it was a mix when he bought it. People can sell pets for
any amount of money they want. I don't see what sort of a case he could
have, for any reason, other than not doing any research about dog
ownership beforehand.

Unfortunately I should have done my research but holding "Jordan" - it
was already too late. My girlfriend and I fell in love with the dog at
first sight - we were just looking but after holding it we couldn't
wait. We have never owned a pet nor have friends that do so we were
pretty ignorant about the entire situation. Of course I willingly paid
for the pup so it's no ones fault but my own.

It's an expensive mistake and something I won't do again. I'd demand a
refund due to my own ignorance but I can't let go now. I appreciate all
the feedback this board as given me.

PS it has been through a vet already and everything is clear. It's
amazing how much nicer coming home is when there's someone at your door
and that is priceless.

Cheers.

Ripped off? Well I don't see any evidence of fraud. I don't see any
evidence that anyone misled you. I see a situation in which someone made
an impulse purchase and was satisfied at the time they made the purchase
that it was "worth" it. Was it an unwise purchase? Absolutely. Could you
have gotten a wonderful friend and companion for a fraction of the price?
Definetly. But the person to be most annoyed at for the situation is the
person in the mirror.

I don't like pet shops for a lot of reasons. One of the top reasons I
don't like shops that sell dogs is because they allow people to make an
impulse purchase. That often turns out very badly for the pet. Too often
people do not put in the hard work that is needed to turn a cute puppy
into a wonderful adult best friend.

Pay close attention and put a lot of effort into getting the house
training right. That is one of the big reasons people give up the small
dogs - they were too casual about the house training. Sacrafice time now
and beat the odds.

Many of us would have preferred that you had not bought from a pet
store...maybe adopted instead...but I would say if you love the dog, the
money was well spent. The dogs will give you a whole lot more than a $1000
dollars of love and affection in the coming years...
You can always make more money.
