Default Pink Nose / Pigmentation / Remedies?

Hi All,

My beloved 4-yr. old golden's nose turned pink at about 1 yr. of age and
never turned back to being black, even in the summer months when she had
more light exposure. She's been on Canidae dry kibble since 6 months of
age and does very well on their formula; her skin and coat are
absolutely gorgeous.

One friend recently told me I should add 1 tablespoon of of extra-virgin
olive oil in each meal and that would help restore the dark pigmentation
to her nose. I'd never heard of this before.

Do you have any info on this or any other suggestions that you know of
to restore pigmentation to a dog's nose?

thanks.

I was told to give Roxy kelp! The reason for giving kelp being that it
contains minerals which are needed for the black pigment. Roxy developed a
slightly pink nose during her first winter. It did go back to black, but
some things I have read state that the nose may lose some pigment during
winter months in order to allow more absorption of the sun, then turn back
to black when summer is near. So her nose turning black again may have just
been normal.

Do you provide your dog's water in a plastic dish? Some people think this
is a cause for loss of pigment. Others say stainless steel does the same.
So, I use a glass dish. Either way, Roxy's nose has stayed black since that
first winter. She is now 3 1/2. Oh, I do give her plenty of extra virgin
olive oil, so maybe that's why!

Oppie's nose turned pink his first winter and never turned back - he's a
yellow lab. I checked with my vet and other sources and was told not to
worry about it. So he still has a pink nose at age 7. And he's otherwise
in excellent health.

I tend to think it's just the luck of the draw - some dogs just have pink
noses.

Just remember to put sunblock on the pink skin during summer if it stays
pink, as the skin without pigment can get sunburned.

Murphy has a small pink 'freckle' on her muzzle and I got some white zinc to
put on it - fortunately she can't quite reach to lick it off! With zinc I
can easily see whether it's still there or not too. She does have a white
patch of fur there though so the white zinc doesn't look out of place )
