Canine vision: Why dogs don't watch TV
From last week's *The Economist*:
"For people, the average CFF (critical flicker-fusion frequency: the lowest frequency at which a flickering light appears to be a constant source of illumination) is 60 hertz (ie, 60 times a second). This is why the refresh-rate on a television screen is usually set at that value. Dogs have a CFF of 80Hz, which is probably why they do not seem to like watching television. To a dog a TV programme looks like a series of rapidly changing stills." http://preview.tinyurl.com/lb86qjt See also: http://onpoint.wbur.org/2009/09/22/a-dogs-eye-view -- Bob www.kanyak.com |

Well, this all really applies to CRTs. LCDs, LEDs, and plasma have a longer persistence and dogs are able to see the images easily. Just ask my Aussie who barks like crazy at any animal that comes on screen (geico camel, horses, etc.), then runs into the kitchen "behind" the TV to see if he can find them.
