Default torn ACL

AH! My 2 year old pit tore his ACL yesterday. my vet said i should
visit an orthopedic specialist for surgery, and i have been
researching, and there are some other options. the vet also gave me
Rimadyl for anitinflamatory and pain.. but have been reading about the
bad side effects of this drug and am considering taking him off of it.
any help or advice?? has anyone else experienced a dog with a torn ACL
before? please let me know, thank you, Kelly.. and Jake.

Torn ACLs don't heal on their own and the longer you wait, the more the dog
will start over relying on the other leg and put it at risk for joint
disease and possibly another torn ACL.

As for the Rimadyl, it works well for chronic problems and short term for
pre and post op orthopedic surgery. Also Deramaxx. However, horror stories
abound on the internet. Consider the source, but precautions do need to be
taken. As long as baseline blood panels are done and the liver and kidneys
are healthy, there shouldn't be a problem. Regular bloodwork if these drugs
are given long term will be necessary to monitor the liver and kidneys.

Short answer - get that second opinion.

Sharon,

Is correct this is not going to fix it self and you need to get the dog
treatment ASAP. This is extremely painful it's like slamming your fingers
in a car door over and over again.

The sooner it's fixed the less damage to the joint and the better chances
for a full recovery. My lab/husky mix had full tears on both he rear legs
and with the proper treatment he recovered completely. Even after treatment
the dog may have some arthritis over time in the joint but it won't be
crippling arthritis.
