From the above site: "The next litter that may contain
merles is due July 14, 2006. The expectant parents are
Terragethen Lola and Terragethen Justice Timber. (Lola is
Portia's mother and carries the merle gene.)"

Someone (Liisa? Chris?) correct me if I'm wrong. But I've
always gone on the assumption that merle could not be
"carried." If a dog has the merle gene, it is merle. Yes?
No? In either case, the section I quoted above contains a
link to "Lola" who supposedly carries merle. That link
leads to a photo of an obviously white Poodle. Double
dilute perhaps? I don't know. The pigment seems awfully
black for that, but... Anyone want to comment?

Lola is white, and so it is impossible to say if she is merle or not. If
Lola has produced merle pups when bred to a non-merle dark dog then yes,
Lola "carries" merle. Actually she is merle and not a "carrier", but as her
pattern is totally invisible, I'd say that it is ok to call her a carrier
in this case.

Just a normal white Poodle. They are genetically ee yellows and they are
bred to have very good, dark pigment.

A double merle dog can be solid white, but it doesn't have proper skin
pigment, at least not all over and it nearly always has solid blue eyes. It
also nearly always has bad hearing or vision problems. Merle is a kind of
diluting gene, but still a double merle shouldn't be called "double
dilute".

Double dilute should refer to bb dd lilac, and that's not white but a
certain shade of grey-brown or beige. Lilac is eumelanin, and so it counts
as one of the four "dark" colors there a black, brown/chocolate,
blue/slate and lilac. (Nearly) all Weims are lilacs, as well as "fawn"
Dobermanns.
