COPD with nasal complications--please help
My 13 year old rat terrier was recently diagnosed with Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder by X-ray. This was after a few weeks of coughing, sneezing, and sniffing. He is taking aminophylline, a bronchodilator, and oral steroids to lower inflammation. He has also taken 2 courses of antibiotics in case he has a respiratory infection. His blood work is pretty good, though. We are all aware that the steroids suppress the immune system, but they seem pretty necessary in this case. To add to the mix, this dog is also hypothyroid and is on medication for that. He also takes Rimadyl for intervertebral disk problems. He has never had an problems from the Rimadyl, and I have been good about getting regular blood work to check his liver for that. He has a good vet and he has been in for a lot of visits since this started. I am looking for info from others to see if it is common for dogs to have a lot of mucous in their nasal passages/sinuses with this condition. The cough is pretty well controlled now, but to put it frankly, his nose is full of snot. He sounds like a human at wits' end with a cold, sniffing and snorting to try to breathe through his nose. When he sneezes there is usually clear or whitish snot. Does this happen with anyone else's dog who has COPD? Is there anything separate you can do about it? He had a really bad night last night and I'm taking him in to the vet again, but wanted to ask around to see if there is anything that has worked for anyone else. He is so miserable. Thanks in advance, Amanda |
