Default Owner allergies

Hello, This is the first time I am visiting your group. I am thinking
about getting a Westie for my 10 year old daughter. She seemed to have
an allergic reaction to our golden retriever when she was a toddler.
Does any one here know if Westies are hypo-allergenic?

There are no dogs that are 100 % hypoallergenic. Some people with allergies
can stand some dogs better than others, but for some people any dog will
give them symptoms. Breeds i have heard mentioned by allergic people are
poodles, pumis and bichon frise.
The best thing to do if you really want to get a dog is to find a breeder
that will let your daughter spend a lot of time with his/her dogs, that way
you will know if there is a chance that she will not get symptoms. This
means time indoors with dogs for hours.
I also hope that you know that very few 10 year old children have what it
takes to take care of a dog. It is most likely that you will have to train
the dog and take it out for walks.

I'm allergic to a lot of different breeds of dogs (long and short hair), but
am not bothered at all by terriers, especially those with wire coats. I'm
sure it varies person to person.

By all means have your daughter visit the types of dogs you are considering,
and allow her to have a lot of interaction with them to make sure there is
no reaction.
