-- Tara Woman Gets Maximum Penalty In Animal Cruelty Case Officers Find 30 Malnourished Dogs, Animal Remains On Property POSTED: 6:37 pm EDT May 14, 2004 MAXTON, N.C. -- A Robeson County woman got the maximum sentence Friday for abusing and neglecting 30 dogs. Mary Meekins Mary Meekins was sentenced to 90 days in prison after she pleaded guilty to 53 counts of animal cruelty and 100 counts of failure to bury an animal carcass. Emotions filled the courtroom as pictures and graphic video detailed some of the worst abuse animal cruelty Officer Katherine Floyd has ever seen. "There were some skeletons to some animals, I don't know what they were," Floyd said when testifying. On April 26, Floyd and other officers found 30 malnourished animals on Meekins' property and more than 100 animal remains in her back yard. "When I look at that video -- she took care of herself and appears to be well-fed, but the dogs were not," Judge James Bell said. Officers videoed 30 malnourished dogs on Meekins' property. Bell did not take pity on Meekins and gave her the maximum jail time the law allows in animal cruelty cases. "If I was that type of person, I could kill her myself, because she doesn't deserve anything -- no animals, no dogs, no cats, nothing," animal rescuer Ann Adams said. Many rescue groups that are taking care of the dogs found on Meekins' property feel her sentence should be more. "If you steal a dog, it's a felony. If you starve it, beat it and torture it it's a misdemeanor," Floyd said. "And if you've got no prior record, all you get is a slap on the hand." Meekins will start serving her 90-day sentence in Robeson County on June 1. She is also prohibited from owning animals again. Related Stories: May 13, 2004: Man Arrested, Charged I would have liked to see her get much more jail time but this is still a huge victory in North Carolina. Now it is time to work on changing the laws! |

Unfortunately there's only a 90 day max sentence for abuse since its a misdemeanor. I don't believe it can be broken up into separate counts. Its disgusting. Dog theft carries a heavier penalty than abuse does. Hopefully this will spark a big change in the legislature in NC. -- Tara |
