Need high energy/nutrient concentrate
diddy said in rec.pets.dogs.health:
I need some suggestion for a more nutrient dense food so that she meets nutritional requirements on a minimal volume. Evo, from Naturapet, is about the most nutrient-dense kibble I've come across. Very low carb, though, and I have no idea as to what pregnant bitches need. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

Barring that, Innova, by the same manufacturer, is also pretty calorie dense. You may want to look into performance formulas from various manufacturers, as those are more nutritionally dense in general. Suja |

With a pregnant bitch you probably want more than just calories - you need to pay attention to overall nutritional content. Need high energy/nutrient concentrate
Diddy: I've made Crockpot Chicken or Slammin' Salmon for my pregnant bitches. This can be poured on food, or fed as a meal. I also make a wholesome milk meal for nursing females. Wholesome Milk Meal (for puppies and nursing females): 1 cup of goat's milk, one egg, 1/2 cup of plain yogurt, 1 tablespoon of cold-pressed flax seed oil, 1 tsp of raw honey, one banana. If for puppies, I will add vitamins such as liquid Poly V sol baby vitamins and a couple of drops of liquid Vit. E. Blend well - serve. Depending on how many puppies you are feeding, you can make more. This is a great treat for adult dogs too. Crock Pot Chicken: (for finicky/sick dogs and nursing females): Take a whole fryer chicken cut up or any parts of a chicken and put in crock pot and fill with water until chicken is almost covered. You can add some garlic cloves and seasoning such as fresh cilantro/parsley and some veggies. Cook for at least 24 hours or until bones crumble between your fingers. You'll want to cook this stuff outside or in a shed as it STINKS! But the dogs LOVE it. Freeze in individual portions for a bi-weekly treat. A baked yam with 1 to 2 tins of canned fish - or my "Slammin' Salmon" recipe. I cut up two whole, raw salmons and stuff them into my crock pot. I add water to almost cover the fish. I might add some herbs such as fresh cilantro/parsley. Then I cook it on high for at least 12 hours. I cook this mixture out in my shed, as I can't stand the smell. The bones crumble up easily and the dogs just LOVE this stuff! Leftovers can be frozen. Flip |
