Default What is our puppy?

Hello,
We recently got a puppy at our local animal shelter. She's very friendly
and gets along well with our kitten. According to the staff at the animal
shelter she's about 7 weeks old. We were curious if anyone recognizes what
sort of mix she might be. Here are some pictures:

(These aren't gross pictures!!! Like some that were recently posted!)

Thank you in advance.

Sophie

Holy cow, is she ever cute!
At that age, and w/o knowing her size, it's really hard to tell what
she might be. In a few weeks, you'll have a better idea of whether
or not her ears will stay down, or prick up. She's definitely got
a sableing factor to her coloration, which could point in many
directions. She's got a cute, dark mask, which could be anything
from a mix of German Shepherd, or Boxer, or Akita, Malinois (that's where
your ear factor will help play in). If she's little,
it could be Lhasa Apso, or Peke, or I'm sure lots of other breeds/
breed mixes that have that masking.
I can't explain it, but I think of Australian Shepherd when I see the
face photo of her...maybe? Who knows! :-)
She is VERY cute, though!
Please keep us posted on photo updates as she grows! Her baby
photos remind me of when my Coda (a Collie/? mix) was a baby.

Thank you so much for your reply! Your Coda is a cutie too! I love seeing
such sweet pictures. Thank you for all your ideas on possible mixes. It
will be interesting to see what she grows up to be. We'll post more
pictures so anyone interested in following the mystery can do so. :-)
Thank you again,

Sophie

Thank you for your reply. It's interesting how many different kinds of dogs
she resembles. :-)

My first thought upon seeing the pictures was that she has some German
Shepherd in her and maybe Chow Chow too.

she's incredibly cute! Shelly mentioned that she's sable, but it looks
more like light brindling to me. it's hard to tell from the photos you
posted, though. she looks an awful lot like elliott did when he was a
puppy.

http://home.bluemarble.net/~scouvret...liott_baby.jpg

elliott is Pit Bull x Chow (according to the resident canine genetics
expert, Liisa, there's something else in there, too, to account for the
long hair). he's a big love and couldn't be sweeter if he tried.

No, certainly not brindle. No stripes in that coat, just normal "sabling"
aka dark shading which is part of the sable pattern. The pup will turn

much
lighter than it is now, and the dark mask might get smaller but probably
not disappear totally. Too early for me to start guessing the breed.

I was surprised at how much lighter Coda got as he aged. He was
quite dark at 10 wks, but by the time he was 6-8 mos, the black
overlay was barely noticeable. I've seen that with a lot of Tervuren
pups too, now, they are so black, but lighten up as the black 'spreads
out' (not the right terminology, but get what I'm trying to say? :-))
I can't get an idea of size, so we'll just have to wait a few weeks
or more before we can get good guesses going again!
