1 1/2 yr old lab with leaky bladder

I have a 1 1/2 yr old english lab who has always had a leaky bladder.
The more water she drinks, the leakier she gets. She is not spayed,
and has had the problem since birth according to the breeder. She
likes to lay on her back, spread out like a playboy centerfold
sometimes (LOL). When she does I can push on her lower tummy (where her
bladder is), and urine will dribble out. Also, if she's been sleeping
for a while she will leak, especially when she gets up. I'm sure if
she sneezed she would leak too (just like humans do as they get older).
She is house trained, and does go pee outside where she is supposed to
go. Poor girl is always wet with pee on her back legs in the am.
Thank goodness she's a lab with the semi water proof coat, and that
she loves to swim on a daily basis, so she doesn't smell and has no
skin problems from urine contact.

She doesn't have a bladder infection, and we waited to see if she would
grow out of it and she hasn't. The vet refered us to a specialist, but
I can't afford it right now. I was wondering if anyone else has had a
similar experience with their dog and if they were able to solve the
problem with surgery, etc... Hormones aren't the issue with her, so
meds wouldn't help according to the vet.

..........I've never had this problem, but I doubt that anything but surgery
will correct it. She must have some kind of congenital abnormality if this
has been going on since birth.

You mention hormones and meds, does that include PPA?

If it isn't a hormone problem, and it isn't an infection, it may be a
physical anomaly where the ureters are attached to the bladder on the wrong
side of the valve that keeps it from leaking and allows her to "hold it"
This could be corrected by surgical means. If this is a possibility. it
would probably require the tools available to a specialist to find it, and
then fix it. If this scenario may be the case, all the meds or hormones in
the world won't help.

Has a tumour been ruled out? I had a very sad day yesterday at the
vet's with a friend who had to have her 6yr old shepherd/lab cross put
down. He started leaking urine on Saturday and ultrasound found a
tumour that was compromising his aorta and urinary tract and bowel. No
surgical remedy. I hope this isn't the case with your guy - but please
have it checked out.

Have had the same problem with one of my spayed dogs, she would be
sleeping and leaked.

Vet suggested Prion which in her case worked.
