Killing unwanted dogs
Several posts had criticized China for killing 50,000 dogs to prevent
rabies. This prompt me to look at dog killings/getting rid of unwanted dogs practice in general. Thank to pawinthecity.org, American data is readily available. Other netters are welcomed to add their inputs concerning other countries. How to deal with unwanted dogs? Two ways: 1. To killed them actively. 2. To let them die as strayed dogs. In America, 25.55 million dogs and cats are born every year. An absolute majority of them would be killed or die as strayed dogs and cats. http://www.pawsinthecity.org/default.asp?nc=85&id=43 ---------------------------- Nationwide Statistics: 1. Over 70,000 puppies and kittens are born everyday. 10,000 people are born everyday. Do the math! There are not enough homes for the number of animals born everyday. 2. 30% of animals in shelters are Purebreds. For every animal you breed, a home is lost for an animal in a shelter. 3. 6-8 million animals enter shelters every year. Many more are strays on the streets (Humane Society of the United States). 4. It costs US taxpayers almost $2 Billion to impound, shelter, kill, and dispose of unwanted animals yearly. (Metroplex Animal Coalition). Local Statistics: 1. An average of 200,000 healthy animals are euthanized in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex every year. That is almost 548 animals every day! (Metroplex Animal Coalition). 2. In 2004, The City of Dallas Animal Shelters alone impounded 28,686 dogs and cats. Of these, 25,699 were killed by lethal injection. 3. Every 3 minutes a dog or cat is euthanized (Metroplex Animal Coalition). ------------------------------ |

Has China become civilized with Western believes that dog are no longer edible? And dogs are to be killed and thrown away? Yes. This is the 64 million dollar question. What is actually more natural/humane/spiritual? Eat the otherwise healthy dogs or burn them. Actually, some Tibetans still let the animals eat the corpses of the deceased humans. They call the practice sky burial. It's all in the semantics. When Europeans deemed "necessary" to "cull" cattles to prevent spread of Mad Cow, it's totoally righteous. Never mind millions of cows are not euthanized humanely, but hit in the head with a bolt, and many do not die and are burried alive. This is typical "factory farm" practice of inhuman western "intense farming practice". Abuse of food animal in the West is so prevelant, it far exceeds rate of abuse in China, as simple math proves. The fact 25-30% of Chinese are vegetarian, China has done more for animal rights than most Western nations in the world. As to dogs and cats being food animals in some culture, it is a "complicated issue" especially when crossing the "cultural divide". America's "cultural superiority" on what animal is okay to eat simply do not meet the test of rationality. In American culture there too exists animals that are both pet and food, such as rabbits and pigs. ------------------------------ |

Whatever happen to the good old days of dog meat delicacy? Has China become civilized with Western believes that dog are no longer edible? And dogs are to be killed and thrown away? ------------------------------ Don't you worry, dog meat is still being consumed in healthy quantities in China. This goes back thousands of years. China is still a net exporter in culinary culture. |

He rarely knows anything about anything, but boy can he make noise! Dumber than a doornail but can shriek like an old lady! BTW, you're too dumb to understand this, but when people criticize the Bush Administration, Bush and Co. have been known to respond "Why do you hate America?" It's a lame way of deflecting criticism. Maybe you could get a job with them. wrote: ltlee1 wrote: wrote: ltlee1 wrote: Several posts had criticized China for killing 50,000 dogs to prevent rabies.
