Default Skin Problems, plz help.

Hi all,

I just find out of this forums,

I have a serious problem with my dog; she is a 6 Y.O. Mix Cocker and Puddle.

A year a go she got the shot for rabies, at that time she develop a bump
(bubble) under the skin that re-absorb with the time, This year she receive
the shot at the same pet super market and the same place on her, like the
last time, this time the bump stay much longer, after 3 months bump stays
there, doggy didn't looks strange at all, just for occasional pain when we
touch her,

So I thought was a simple inflammation, I use some ice and I rub the bump,
for my surprise the bump brake and start to drain, it was not pus, was some
clear semi-transparent liquid with not smell at all, I thought that was all,
I was wrong.

After this many more bumps start to come up all around the lower half, and
each one of them brake and drip, leaving a horrible hole on her skin without
close, I took her to the first vet and he didn't knew what was wrong so he
start with some antibiotic and order study's including blood and diabetes
checking, apparently nothing was wrong with the exception of some bacteria
but as the doctor said this bacteria is pretty common on the soil so this
shouldn't be a surprise since she enjoy to be on the grass for long periods
of time.

After two months without any result I took her to a second vet, same thing,
he didn't know what is wrong and more study were in order, once again
nothing wrong with the dog with the exception of the same bacteria from the
soil, so he starts with more antibiotic.

After this two more bumps show up, one on each rear leg, and have a big and
hard bump on her lower stomach, just close to the vagina.

So far the bumps are not coming any more but the ones open don't show any
sign to be closing, I am really frustrated because vets seems to be happy
getting money but no one is helping my girl.

She used to be a very happy girl always running around me, now she just
stays in a corner and don't want to move, when I come back home she just
barely move her tail.

I feel so frustrated, I know she is in big pain, some times I think its time
to put her sleep and freed her of this pain, but I don't have the guts to
take her life even with all that pain and suffer.

Anyone ever heard something about this?

Do you know or recommend any GOOD vet that knows about skin decease?

Thank you all.

It would help to know where you live. That said, there are a lot of
veterinary specialists. While a veterinary dermatologist would
probably be a good bet, there may be much more to the problem than the
skin. A lot of area have veterinary specialist "groups" that would be
able to share information and refer.

No, do you know them?
Do you recomend them?

As per you can see in my experience is frustrating to find a new vet that
"havent seen anything like that" and of course dont know what to do until
they run their own tests regardless of any other test shown.

Thanks a lot for your help.

sorry, no, but I live in MD ;-D

I Googled veterinary dermatology specialists in Miami and this one
seemed to fit the bill and be appropriately located. A consultation
will cost of course, but at this point, what do you have to lose?

Frank,

A customer of mine had something with a similar description
happen to her Lab, and faced similar frustration with vets. They
did a variety of research and finally got it under control. I'm
going to try to get in touch with her--it may take awhile.

.............That was just a rabies vaccination or were there other things in
it? Does your county require a yearly rabies vaccination? If so, get your
dog a 3 yr shot (which is the same as a 1 yr - only the label is different).
Just last Jan. the state required counties to recognize that a 3 yr shot
lasts 3 yrs so even if your country demands a yearly rabies vax they have to
honor the 3 yr. (I live in FL also). I would not get any other vaccinations
at this time. If you have the vax done at the pet store, do you have any
kind of ongoing relationsip with a vet - one who has seen your dog over
time?

.......Here's a pretty complete list of causes of ulcers (which is what these
are - if they were abscesses from infection it would smell and the fluid
would be cloudy):
http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=422

start with some antibiotic and order study's including blood and diabetes
checking, apparently nothing was wrong with the exception of some bacteria
but as the doctor said this bacteria is pretty common on the soil

.........OK, do you have copies of all the lab work done (from this vet and
2nd vet)? If not, get them as you'll need them when you go to the new vet.
Where exactly did he find this bacteria - did he do a culture from the
ulcers? And what was the name of the bacteria. (Pseudomonas?) Looking at
diabetes was a good guess - the skin becomes very fragile. What was the
antibiotic and how long was it given (in both cases).

After this two more bumps show up, one on each rear leg, and have a big

................Obviously this is more than a skin thing if her demeanor has
changed so drastically. She must feel ill. All of these *bumps* have
opened and drained and won't heal? I was thinking about a biopsy, but this
site says no (you have to sign up - free and you don't have to be a vet to
see this):
http://www.ivis.org/advances/Mueller...apter.asp?LA=1
Ulcers and erosions should not be biopsied. Do not expect a pathologist to
be able to describe more specifically than "an ulcer" if an ulcer is
biopsied or "a crusted erosion" if an excoriated area is selected.

.......If you do sign up, read the chapter in the derm text called The Dog
With Nodules:
http://www.ivis.org/advances/Mueller...apter.asp?LA=1

........How big are these bumps (diameter)? Does the dog try to scratch
them?

I feel so frustrated, I know she is in big pain, some times I think its

time
to put her sleep and freed her of this pain, but I don't have the guts to
take her life even with all that pain and suffer.

.........don't give up yet just because the vets you saw couldn't help you.

Do you know or recommend any GOOD vet that knows about skin decease?

............If two regular vets have been unable to help, you need a vet
dermatologist. Did the 2 other vets not suggest any further testing? I'm
thinking there's an underlying condition that is making your dog susceptible
to ordinary skin flora or the dog has something like pemphigus.

OK, I found a pretty complete description in some old emails.
There were two dogs involved, a Lab and a Golden, living
several hundred miles apart. Vets were stumped. One labeled
the condition "sterile panniculitis."

My customer reasoned that the cause couldn't be environment
or parasites, so she focused on diet. She got in contact with a
retired formulating vet from Pedigree. He apparently had a dog
with the same problem and formulated the Pedigree Weight
Maintenance food specifically to address it.

Both dogs were switched to this food, the bumps/sores they had
cleared up, and no new ones appeared in the several months
since.

If I read this on a newsgroup, posted by a stranger, I'd be
skeptical. I'm not sure what I can do about that. Based on my
acquaintance with the Lab's owner, a mighty bright woman, I'm
pretty well convinced she got it right. Certainly if I had a dog
nothing else would help, I'd try it.

Hope this helps!

Amy Dahl
