Taking photos of puppies - direct flash??
A friend of mine has some 5-week old cocker puppies.
I went over to take pictures. I did *not* want to flash them directly, so we set up in a well-lit bathroom, and just did what we could with no flash at all. The photos turned out alright, but I think that next time I may put a large white reflector card off to one side, point the flash at that, and get indirect lighting that way. How sensitive are puppies' eyes at this age? I'd never want to flash them head-on, but assuming they're facing me, would an indirect flash via a white bounce card well off to the side be unwise? Another fellow who was there apparently *did* use his direct flash in the photos. He said he has a diffuser on his flash, but still - there's a lot of light going directly at them. Thanks, BD. |

The flash is about as bright as a day light, well, less, but for 1/125 of a second or thereabout. If puppies can stand day light, and they do, you really shouldn't worry about it. |

second or thereabout. If puppies can stand day light, and they do, you really shouldn't worry about it. Only difference is, in daylight, their eyes will accomodate to the light. No chance to do that if you're flashing at them. However, point taken. I still won't fire direct flash at them, but I won't be concerned about a bounce card off to the side somewhere. Tx! BD |
